Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was the result of a bill sponsored by Senators Nancy Kassebaum (R-KY) and Ted Kennedy (D-MA), which was signed into law in August 1996. Psychologists need to be compliant with three major rules of HIPAA:
- Security Rule - Compliance Date: April 2005
- Privacy Rule - Compliance Date: April 2003
- Transaction Rule - Extended Compliance Date: October 16, 2003
