International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health

The World Health Assembly approved the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) in May, 2001, making this the standard for reporting information on functional consequences of health conditions. Diagnosis alone provides an incomplete picture of the overall health status of individuals. Information on functional status is needed to predict service needs both at the level of individual treatment planning and at the level of population health policy.

The American Psychological Association is collaborating with the World Health Organization (WHO) and several national associations of health professionals in the development of a Procedural Manual and Guide for a Standardized Application of the ICF. It is anticipated that this will become the official clinical manual of the ICF for English speaking countries and that it will be translated and adapted for other countries.
